Noguchi described the Akari as “luminous sculpture”. The UF3-Q’s organic shade is formed from washi paper on a bamboo skeleton, resting on a slender wire stem that lets the light appear to float.
For over eighty years Vitra has produced the works of the world’s leading designers, protecting original designs and the ideas behind them.
Sculptor Isamu Noguchi began the Akari series in 1951 in Gifu, Japan, marrying traditional lantern craft with modernist form; each authentic Akari still carries his sun-and-moon signature.
